From the Declaration
To a constitution
The time has come to return to what united us from the beginning.
The time has come to turn our Declaration of Independence into a constitution and anchor Israel’s foundations as a Jewish and democratic state.
In recent years, we have somewhat lost our way.
Our disagreements turned into an internal conflict, and the rules of the game themselves have become part of the battle within our country.
I believe that the time has come to return to the last point where we were united– and to once again sign our Declaration of Independence.
This time, the Declaration of Independence will be the preamble of Israel’s constitution and will anchor a foundation of our shared values:
The State of Israel is the nation-state of the Jewish people. It is founded on freedom, justice, and peace. It guarantees equal social and political rights for all its citizens regardless of religion, race or gender.
Alongside the Declaration of Independence, we will also enact a ‘Basic Law: Legislation’ that will set once and for all clear, agreed-upon rules of the game: what is the authority of the Knesset, what is the authority of the government and what is the authority of the judiciary.
Zionism succeeded when people who were different from each other knew how to put aside their differences and work together for something greater than themselves.
Together, we created the State of Israel. Our generation’s mission is to together keep Israel Jewish, democratic and united forever.
Together, we will repair what’s broken.
